Eternal

November 27th 2007 09:25
A Prompt for Writing - Try to write a short story where one or more characters are able to live forever.

My attempt.

One day I meet you, but you think you meet me. We hit it off and begin to enjoy each other’s company. We become close. We trade our deepest secrets.

I tell you I’m going to live forever. You don’t believe it.

Eventually you realise I’m serious. You know I believe I will live for eternity. You decide it’s because I’m scared of death.

We make love. We go to the theater. The movies. We go interstate. I take you overseas. I have more money than you could imagine. I play the stocks brilliantly. I teach you everything there is to know. I teach you things that are ancient, things you could only ever see in your dreams. I teach you languages long dead. I teach you politics, sports and fashion. Somehow, you see, they all appear the same to me. A game of football, a struggle for independence, all a story, a tiny human tale, a way to fill in the time, in their own right.

I marry you, but you think you marry me. We make vows, to love each other till death do us part. You say you will love me for eternity. I say I will love you as long as you are part of me.
You think I seem tired. You think I seem too tired. I’m energetic most the time. But sometimes when you look into my eyes you think I look like I’ve seen it all. I can’t tell you that I have. You don’t believe me.

Time passes and you age. We joke about how I never seem to get older. You don’t believe it at first; of course not, but soon you can no longer deny it.

I watch you whither. I watch you grow into your age, your skin melting over your bones, your joints growing knobby and out of shape. You have trouble breathing. You can’t take it. You see into my eyes, and you know it’s nothing new. You know I’ve seen countless others pass through their lifetimes. You know that you are just another, just another lover being sucked away.

You die and I don’t go to your funeral. I go away, somewhere else. I go somewhere new, that has never buried one of my lovers. Maybe Isle of Man, maybe some remote part of Africa. The world is widening. It is incredible.

And then I am gone.

Eternal
To exist forever... To never end

The first thing that popped into my mind when reading this was the tragic romance in the movie Highlander.....
As Queens "Who Wants to live Forever" plays in the background we see the heartbreaking tragedy of an immortal falling in love and then slowly watching his lover age and die.

"A legacy of life without living", she thinks to herself watching from her apartment window as another long line of cars in a respectful procession make their way to a gravesite.

She is tired. Her flesh, blood and breath were that of a young woman. Her mind was tired and worn. Feeble, sometimes, she thought. "What did I do to deserve this?" she whispered to no one.

She no longer kept pets, lovers or friends. She was tired of watching them die. Even in youth, she could see the decay within them. She could smell it. It was a pungent smell, the smell of loss to her. She no longer wanted to have that smell waft up her nostrils. She made the decision long ago to kill her own heart. If only the rest of her would follow.

She leaned up against the window and felt the warmth of the sun against her skin. She willed cancer to come from the UV rays. "Penetrate me. Make love to me. Remove me from this place."

Breathing without living had become a laborious task. She no longer cried for the loss of touch or of love. She cried now over the task of continuing to live without pain.

Pain was a beautiful thing, for it meant that life meant something, stood for something, was something to someone. The loss of that was long and cruel in its torture of her.

She curled up in the window seat, pulled her heavy blanket over her, and closed her eyes to dream of death and pain. It was her only comfort.

Wow, voices... impressive... very saddening though, but a beautiful piece of writing.

Well done.

Hi Brenton,

I also thought of the Highlander, but a part went deeper too to alchemy and the immortal soul...

...poignant, and moving... a saddened reflection?..

Lilla...

Captain Roger Eternality was
An old man the most of his life.
He became known as Captain Catatonia.
Famed for his saliva strands,
His inability to wipe his own jobbied-arse,
And his brittle bones
The only words he ever said:
"Kill me you fuckers...if you can!"
Usually such bouts of activity
Resulted in marathon spells of pseudo-death:
Sleep.
So he slept and slept,
Till they thought he was dead.
Buried in a coffin
He at last found peace from all "the fuckers",
As he affectionately coined people,
Now you'll find him the metrical equivalent of
Six feet under.
