10 Heroes That Need to be Written.
June 2nd 2008 10:28
1. Like Bond but Gay. We never see gay heroes. Wouldn't that be just fantastic though?
2. A disabled hero would be great. Perhaps in a wheelchair or something? Maybe a mental disability. Can you imagine the potential for a Manic Depressive Hero struggling to get the girl and save the day? Or Schizophrenic, or MPD. Autism and OCD Heroes tend to be fantastically complex, but are quickly becoming a stereotype. What kind of struggles could your hero face in this way?
3. Ugly Heroes don't seem to exist a great deal. I think Ugly Betty was started on that kind of premise, but there' so many more directions for the concept to be taken.
4. Fat Heroes would be pretty cool too.
5. 'The Unforgivable Hero.' We like our Good Guys Good. Even when we have villains turning into heroes we tend to belittle their dirty past, and their dark side becomes more about our amusement than their flaws. Why not let the dirty villain stay evil even when he’s helping save the day – the moral complexity would be fantastic.
6. An Animal Hero. Granted, it HAS been done before, and numerous times, but it’s not often that it’s done very WELL, and for an older audience. You might have to subvert the concept a bit, but just imagine the potential result.
7. Homeless Hero. We see the man (woman?) with nothing thrown into the position of leader ready to save the day. How would they adapt?
8. Junky Hero. When our protagonist is addicted to drugs, the story tends to be about drug addiction. But what if our drug addicted hero is now having to fight evil in one of it’s many guised. What if the conflict was intertwined with the addiction, like having to take sides in a Columbian conflict. What if he was a producer or seller of drugs instead?
9. The Dying Hero. What if our Hero him/herself was doomed no matter what? What if they were fighting against their own collapsing health. How would this affect their regard for consequence? We see and example of this with Bruce Willis’ character in Sin City, but the concept could be stretched or subverted a bit. What if it was after the character said yes to a potential suicide mission that they discovered new hope?
10. Scientologist Hero. Tom Cruise doesn’t count – wouldn’t a Scientologist Hero be interesting? Or maybe a Raelian?

The problem with gay heroes is that they won't sell. What straight girl wants to pay to see Daniel Craig getting it on with Johnny Depp (ooh I would, but then I'm not your average female), and likewise what straight guy wants to fantasize that he is Daniel Craig getting in on with Johnny Depp?
Didn't Trading Places have a Homeless Hero?
Good post.

1. That would be great, there aren't many gay heroes but there are some in various comic books. If you want some examples GO HERE. Granted there aren't many main characters but they aren't forgotten altogether.
2. You mustn't watch Heroes. One of the characters Niki/Jessica/Gina has a dangerous case of multiple personality disorder which manifests in one personality saving people, one personality killing people and the other just seems to be a bit of a party girl. I'm still laughing to myself about a potential OCD man who can't actually get to the scene of a crime because he keeps unlocking and relocking his OCDmobile.
3. Also in Heroes, a number of the the characters with superpowers are ugly; Dale Smither, Bob, Bishop and although he's not ugly at all, Hiro Nakamura, one of the central characters with a great power is not stereotypically hunky. He's slightly homely and very geeky.
4. Also Heroes. Although Matt Parkman is not fat per se, he is a little on the 'solid' side.
5. Heroes again. So many of the heroes, especially Noah Bennet and Ted, are so morally ambiguous that they are evil and good at the same time and you wouldn't have them any other way.
6. Just'a Lotta Animals were an anthropomophic parody of the Justice League done by DC Comics. But yes, more could be done with that one. How about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Mighty Mouse? Underdog?
7. Homeless Hero has just been done by Will Smith. The movie is called Hancock and will be released soon. CLICK HERE FOR TRAILER
8. Heroes again. Isaac Mendez only has his powers when he's high on smack.
9. I'll have to get back to you on that one. Although in Heroes (I know I'm a stuck record), one of the heroes, Peter Petrelli, truly believes himself to be dying and still goes off to save the world.
10. Hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!! Super Scientologist and Rabid Raelian destroyers of thetans and maker of clones. Fighting sanity wherever it pops up. Would they be quasi gay like in the 60s Batman and Robin?
Fabulous post and I'm very embarrassed by my super long comment. My nerdiness knows no bounds.

haha. Can't think of any two actors that can be more different than those two.
Of course in regards to Chuck, I use that term loosely.
