SHARNEE’S BOOK
Tom and I hooked up me in the bike shed today. I didn’t think he really liked me like that.
Actually I still think he doesn’t. He just needed a bit of something, make him feel better. Him going all funny, with hallucinations and that all the time, it usually scares chicks off.
It was good good. I’m bullshitting myself if I pretend it wasn't. But while we kissed I thought, ‘I like what Mike’s doing now.’
Am I obsessed? I looked through this book, I go on about Mike a lot. I guess when you like someone that much and nothing can happen, you sort of feel empty. Sick gooey insides.
You just keep thinking, over and over, just what it could have been
.

Sitting in form class, Mikes’ teacher read out the notices.

“Jason Madison has lost a size twelve blazer, if any one has seen it please return it to the office. The main computer rooms, E2 and E3 will be out of bounds at Lunchtime, unless you have been specifically asked to join in the Chess tournament celebrations. One from Mr Martin, could Faith Detorris and Michael Curran please report to my office straight after form. That’s all the notices.”

Mike met Faith outside Mr Martins’ office.

“What’s going on?” she asked. Mike shrugged. They looked at the door.

FRANK MARTIN, PRINCIPAL OF SECONDARY.

Faith knocked.

“Come in."

They opened the door and entered the room. Mr Matin had totally destroyed the room since Mr Harris had left. What was once a kaleidoscope of colour was now a boring straight neat prison cell, the sort of place with signs saying ‘Fun is bad’ and ‘TV is the tool of Satan’.

“Please both of you, take a seat.” They sat, nervously beside each other. Mr Martin gave them a fake smile. Unconfidently, they returned the favor.

“Now, I understand that you will be wanting to get back to class so I’ll try to make this simple. There have been certain rumours circulating about the both of you, which I would presume you would be aware of. Do you know which rumors I am speaking of?”

“That we had sex?” said Faith.

“Yes. The basic nature of the rumor as I heard it, details that the both of you were at a large party where you indulged in underage drinking and drug use before commencing to begin sexual intercourse with each other. Now in a case like this where both of you are still fifteen, any one of those three things is illegal. Not only could this cause you problems and unwanted attention, an event like this may seriously damage the reputation of our school. Therefore I have called you here to verify the details of what actually happened. I have already verified that the party did occur, and that you were both present at the time. I’m about to ask one of you to leave. I will interview the other, then allow them to leave, calling in the next and repeating the process. I will then call you both in and describe my action on the event. Before this, would either of you like to say anything?”

“There were no drugs,” said Faith. “I’m a virgin, and there were no drugs.”

“Thank you Faith. Please leave the room.” Slowly Faith rose to her feet and walked over to the door, opened it, left and shut it behind them.

“Now Michael. I just want to let you know the seriousness of our situation. If you did commence intercourse with a minor you can held on charges of rape. You could be put into Juvenile Detention. If you choose to lie to me you are only making your situation so much worse. What happened at the party?”

“What party?”

“Don’t make things difficult. How about you just tell me about the party you think I want you to talk about.”

“With me and Faith?”

“Yes”

“We went to a party. There were people joking and talking. Having fun. We didn’t drink, we took no drugs, no one had sex.”

“Did you perform in any sexual activity?”

“That’s none of you business.”

“If it has potential to damage the image of our school then it is.”

“No. No, sexual activity, no petting, no making out, no canoodling, no getting busy. We talked.”

“Did you kiss?”

“Yes, but I don’t see the point of that question.”

“You don’t need to see the point. I do. Michael, are you telling me the truth.”

“Yes”

“OK then. Faith! Come in!” Faith opened the door and entered the room. Mr Martin nodded at the empty chair beside Mike. She sat in it.

“Michael, you are free to leave.” Mike left the room unspeaking.

“Now Faith. Tell me exactly what happened. Were there drugs?”

“No”

“Drinking?”

“A little.”

“Did you or any other person at the party have intercourse?”

“No.”

“Sexual activity?”

“There was.”

“Were you involved in the sexual activity?” Faith nodded. “With Mike?” She nodded again.

“What happened?”

“We slept together. And we hooked up…”
:How so?”
Faith closed her eyes, took a breath and told him. She felt uncomfortable, violated by his questions. He nodded.

“Faith, tell Michael to come in.” He waited patiently for Mike and Faith to sit.

“I will now deal with this matter as I see fit. In the meantime, you Michael are on a Friday Detention for lying to me. I want you two to stay decently separated through school. Any evidence of you being an item, there will be trouble. Have a nice day, here are your late notes. You may leave.”

***

MIKE HAD A CRAP TIME WHEN HE GOT HOME.

“Oh. Hello Michael,” said his Gran in the door way. Michael froze. His Gran was glaring down at him, her teeth obviously clenched under her tight lips.

“Er… hi Gran…”

“Get inside. Now.” She spoke quietly, in a menacing tone. Michael stepped inside the house.

His Gran looked at him, then slapped his face.

“Your school called. A possibility of you having sexual relationship with Faith. The girl you met before the bra showed up. You do not see her again. You see no one, for the rest of the year. You filthy, filthy fool.”

“I didn’t do anything!”

“I may have bought into your lies when the bra was uncovered, but now I see the truth. Go to your room”

“Gran…”

“GO TO YOUR ROOM!”

“Yes, Gran.”

***

FAITH HOWEVER, HAD A WORSE ONE.

Faith opened the front door and walked up the stairs to her room.

“Is that you Faith?” called her mother from down the stairs.

“Yeah.”

“Come down here please.”

“In a sec.”

“No. Come down now.” Faith slowly put down her bag and walked down the stairs.

“Mum?”

“Your school rang. They said they thought you may be sleeping with Mike.”

“I’m not.”

“Really? You went to a party where there were no adults after tricking me into letting you go. Mike’s dad was dead, he lives with his Gran.”

Faith was silent.

“Why did you trick me Faith? What’s the big idea?”

“I didn’t have sex. I had a drink. One. A vodka fruit cocktail thingy.”

“You got drunk.”

“No!”

“You got drunk and had sex with Michael.”

“I didn’t!”

“Don’t bullshit me Faith! How long has this been going on? The drinking, the sex? How long?”

“It was one drink!”

“Don’t lie to me Faith! You think I don’t notice these things, you think I don’t notice anything, but I can tell. Since that party you’ve been strange.”

“Since that party I’ve been more in love with Mike than ever! That’s what!”

“So you did sleep with him!”

“NO! You don’t notice anything! You only think something’s wrong when some busybody tell you some bullshit!”

“Watch your mouth! You stay away from Mike, you stay in this house. You’re grounded.”

“No.”

“Do not argue with me! I’m your mother”

“You’re blind! How much have you noticed? Want to notice something?” Faith stuck up her arm and pulled down her sleeve, showing her faint scars.

“I tried to kill myself. Michael was the only one who stopped me trying again. I tried pills too. Pills and your gin. You didn’t notice! You noticed fuck-all until the party!”

“Faith! I… You stay here. You stay here, you do not leave this house, you don’t go to school tomorrow. I’ll cancel my appointment’s tomorrow, hang on…”

Faith’s mum ran over to the phone and bashed in a series of numbers.

“Hello, Jill. It’s me, look, I need a favor…” After she hung up, she went back to where Faith was.

Faith was gone.
