New Swallows and Amazons
Adam clutches his controller tightly, leaning forward.
“Almost…” he mutters, steering the speedboat on the TV screen sharply around a mine. “Yes!”
“Down a bit boys,” calls Adam’s mother from outside the room. The girls, Kirsty (eldest of the family) and Kylie, (second youngest, after Duncan) snigger at this. Duncan turns indignantly.
“I wasn’t making noise but!”
“Just shut up Duncan,” says John, the oldest of the family.
Adam barely hears them talking behind him. “I’m a Naval Officer, zooming against time to stop the terrorists launching nuclear attacks against our civilization,” he says to himself.
“Since when do Naval Officers drive speedboats?” says John.
“Since they made the newest elite Naval Speedboat Infiltration squad,” says Adam.
John, nods, even though he’s probably too old for make believe and says “fair enough.”
“We’re all on the boat,” says Adam, “And it’s our job to save the Noosa from these crazy terrorists.”
“Terrorists don’t hate Australia,” says Duncan, “cos we’re all nice and stuff.”
“Terrorists hate everyone,” says Kirsty, “That’s why they’re terrorists, moron.”
Adam dodges another mine, and navigates through a pack of sharks.
“Arrr,” cries Kylie, “Avoid the sharks yarrr!”
“Why’d you let a pirate on your ship, Adam?” asks John.
“Piratess,” corrects Kylie.
“She’s a good pirate,” suggests Adam.
“No I’m not!”
“OK fine… she’s a bad pirate, but we’re giving her gold in return for information.”
“I’m called Scarlet the Evil!”
“OK, crew,” says Adam, “we’re coming up to the waterfall jump, I need to concentrate.”
Miraculously, the group listens, staring on silently, each gripped by adrenalin as they attempt the jump. The speed boat hits the ramp, soaring through the air.
“It’ll never make it,” whispers Kirsty.
“We gunna land good?” says Duncan.
The boat drops, at first towards the water, but all too soon, straight for the rocks below.
“Abandon ship!” yells Kirsty.
Then just as the ship’s about to hit the rocks, the TV goes off, along with everything else in the house. The crew just sit at the couch, staring for a few moments.
“We ‘sploded?” says Duncan.
“No. It was Dad,” says John, quietly. “He managed to alert his Navy crew of what we were doing, and had them organise to catch us.”
“Did he stop the bombs?”
“Did he ever.”
The crew’s mother comes around the corner.
“Looks like the blackout’s hit again,” she says.
“What do we do now?” asks Adam. “Now we don’t have TV or net or games or anything?”
“I wanna go on the boats again!” yells Duncan.
“Why don’t you go on a real boat this time?” she says.
“Where do we get a real boat from?” says Duncan.
“There’s one in the garage, isn’t there?” says John. “The one you and dad took me in, ages ago?”
“Absolutely. If you’re happy to look after the little ones, you’re old enough to take it out.”
John nods, then breaks into a large grin. “Let’s go,” he says, “It’s too hot inside without fans anyhow.
