The Best Way to Write a Poem

June 18th 2007 11:46

First of all, I would like to extend many thanks to Brenton and the rest of the Downwrite gang for letting me be a Downwrite blogger.

The best way to write a poem is to fuck it up. Don’t watch where your fingers are going. Don’t watch your mind either. Better yet, stop doubting. Just shut up. Tear your heart out and chuck the thing onto the keyboard or notepad or wherever and just dribble… well… shit. Let it all come out of your mouth, and puke and puke from the very idea that shit is coming out of your mouth, and when someone complains about the smell, tell them it’s art, and art is the best excuse for life’s imbalances. You can’t be normal to write a poem. You have to stop being embarrassed. You’ve got to smile when you’re all fucked up, you’ve got to cry when things are going well. Think about your best friend in the most sexual way possible. Think about his hair. Think about his eyes and his lips and his tongue and the shape of his body, the calluses on his palms, the smoothness of the back of his hands. Imagine the way he grew up. Imagine those times when he’s looked for that girl. That girl. Imagine swimming in a lake with him and imagine swamp men coming out of the ripples, swamp men in dicky togs, ready to play marco polo. No, see, that’s where you’re starting to doubt. You can’t stop doubting. You can’t keep putting things in order; you can’t predict an ending when you’re a slave to time, there is no such thing as time and there is no such thing as an ending. The best way to write a poem is to compare yourself with everyone else. Judge. The best way to write a poem is to stop comparing yourself with everyone else. Tolerate. You have to make sure your poems rhyme, or else the kids won’t think it’s a poem, and kids are pure and know everything we don’t. You can write acronyms or whatever you call them the ABC shit whatever it’s called. Don’t call bad things GAY, like “Oh, that’s gay,” because that’s impolite, the gays will want to kill you after. The best way to write a poem is to fuck it up. You know all those times when you try to paint, but you majorly fuck it up, and you keep trying to fix it with your paintbrush and shit but it’s only making it worse, well, that’s a poem. Stop thinking, stop planning, that's bullshit. You never think in real life so why think when you write. Be Like Nike. Just do it. Writing truly is a beautiful thing. Creation is a beautiful concept. Write poetry. Dribble poetry. Make mistakes with paint and watch all that beautiful dribble flow.

I really like this. This is how i do poetry.

If a poem I write is actually about something, it's because i've worked outr what it means about halfway through.
