My Question for Writers
July 2nd 2008 13:10
Where does your morality stand?
Do you intentionally or accidentally create moral worlds in your stories in which good is rewarded and evil punished?
Are your character less redeeming features (those you abhor in reality) their downfall?
Do you subvert this notion of morality in the universe of your work?
If so, does this mean you are sending out messages that are influencing the world negatively?

In most of my stories, there is no absolute right or wrong. Other characters interpret things as right or wrong, but they are often hypocrites.
I believe that everyone, from their perspective, is the protagonist in their own stories, so even if they are bad people, they are still the heroes - life goes on. They may go to prison or they may be punished, but life still goes on, and they will still be the good guys. A rapist may rape a girl but change his ways and become the local good Samaritan ten years later. Nobody is perfect. I'm sure with all the perverted things we've done and the lies we've made, us "smart" people can't say we're saints, yet we go ahead and imply it anyway.
"Negative" media doesn't influence people negatively. Hitler didn't play Grand Theft Auto 4 obsessively, he didn't have a copy of American Psycho in his bedroom along with an extensive porn collection. Well maybe he had a porn collection.
